What will 2018 bring you? As a business owner and serial entrepreneur, one of the most important task to work on is setting goals.

For the past 20 years, I have set goals. But here was the problem I did not set goals with a solid foundation.

But over the past several years I have discovered that Setting goals are an art.

As we think and plan for this upcoming 2018 calendar year. I wanted to give you the tools to help you become very successful in charting your course for your life and future.

Below is a Ten-step formula for setting goals using Zig Ziglar’s formula. Try using this formula and see your life thrive in the years to come. Each year I host a Goal setting workshop this year will be even a great year when you put together a plan.

Step 1. Goals are the driving force for personal and business success, the first step to goal setting is we must start with a solid foundation. If you were to build a home you would start with its foundation. This foundation as Zig Ziglar states goals are built on your personal core values.

So, think about this for a minute? In three words how would you describe your personal values? For me, it begins with the word Integrity. The second word is a character and third being honest.

You may come up with a few of your own. My point is, ask yourself this question? It’s a new year and a new you.

Be clear on what you stand for. If you want things to change you must be willing to change.

Step 2. Next is your word and commitment, No one but you can make this commitment to yourself so, sitting down and writing out your goals in one of the most critical lessons to setting goals, this means that when asked what are your goals you don’t point to your head. Take the time to write them down. I suggest getting a journal to start you off on the right track.

Step 3. Next break it down with your daily, weekly, monthly, yearly goals. More importantly, set your intermediate and long-term goals.

Step 4. If you have been to one of my seminar or workshop you may have heard me say you are the Architect of your life. With this said, I want to take a moment to visualize what it is that you desire, imagine seeing yourself, personally and professionally the way you desire to become.

Zig stated: You have to Be before you can Do, and do before you can Have.

Step 5. As I noted in step two we must be committed, but more importantly, we must hold ourselves accountable. We must make a personal commitment to ourselves, this means you write down the thing you know you will accomplish. You might be one of these individuals that have a daily to-do list. If you are most successful people they have a list. I recommend you do the same thing but put this in your daily journal. Record your every intention and action plan and work on it every day.

Step 6. Seek to become better than you were yesterday. This step is the fuel inside you it is what I call the desire to change. The change you desire moves your forward to accomplishing your goals not to mention you get the opportunity to keep score.

When you Plan, Prepare and put all this into practice you create momentum and a pattern of success and a formula to win. When you plan and prepare carefully, you can legitimately expect to have success in your efforts.

Step 7. Be willing to help others, Zig stated if you just help enough other people get what they want you can have what you want. What a formula for success Helping other. I have made it a practice to be a “Gifter”. Maybe the next time you go to a Starbucks buy the person behind you a cup of coffee or a tea.

Step 8. Surround yourself, with likeminded people, be open to growing every day, or as I say be a sponge. Find people that share your vision of the future, and as I said in step 7 be willing to help others.

Step 9. Write down everything in your journal no matter how small or how big. Write it down, look at it daily, state your desires and goals out loud with confidence as you grow into the desire of your life. Remember you can do all things. When you put your plan into action. One more thing, that I started doing several years ago is to write out what you plan on accomplishing a positive message to yourself.

Step 10. Take time to reflect on your journey, and the destination and see yourself reaching your goals. This final step is so important, that is if you put it to practice every day you will develop what I call a new way of thinking and a new habit that will drive you to want to become more this new year. When you reach your goals Know that you were designed for accomplishment, engineered for success and endowed with seeds of greatness. Stay the course to become the winner you were designed to be.
